Tour Highlights

Detailed Itinerary

Each day is carefully crafted to maximise your acclimatisation and enjoyment. Below you will find a complete breakdown of every day, from the rainforest start to the summit triumph.

Day 1

Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Full Day Trek: 3-4 hrs Elevation: 1,950m to 2,650m Accommodation: Simba Camp Meals: Lunch, Dinner

The trek begins at Rongai Gate (also known as Nalemuru Gate), situated on the northern side of Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border. After completing park registration and meeting your climbing team, embark on a hike through the lush rainforest. This fertile zone is home to colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and diverse birdlife. The trail is gently graded and well-defined, making for a pleasant introductory hike. Arrive at Simba Camp at 2,650 metres (8,700 feet), set up your tent, enjoy a hearty meal, and rest in preparation for the days ahead.

Morning: Depart Arusha or Moshi early in the morning for the drive to Rongai Gate (approximately 2-3 hours). The drive passes through cultivated farmlands and small Tanzanian villages before reaching the park gate. Complete registration formalities while your porters organise the equipment. The rainforest is alive with the sounds of birdsong and the chatter of blue monkeys in the canopy above.
Afternoon: Begin the trek from Rongai Gate at around 1,950 metres through dense montane forest. The trail winds gently uphill, crossing small streams and passing under giant ferns and ancient trees. The hike takes approximately 3-4 hours. Your guide will set a steady pole pole (slowly, slowly) pace to begin acclimatisation. Simba Camp is located in a clearing surrounded by forest.
Evening: Arrive at Simba Camp, set up camp, and enjoy a hot meal prepared by your cook. Your guide will brief you on the next day trek. Evening temperatures are cool but comfortable in the forest zone.

Day 2

Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

Full Day Trek: 4-5 hrs Elevation: 2,650m to 3,450m Accommodation: Second Cave Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After a filling breakfast, depart from Simba Camp and head towards Second Cave Camp. The vegetation transitions from rainforest to heath and moorland as you gain altitude. The trail offers fantastic views of Kilimanjaro peaks and the expansive plains below. This section of the route is known for its open landscapes and sense of remoteness. Second Cave Camp is situated at 3,450 metres (11,319 feet) in a dramatic setting with views of the surrounding moorland.

Morning: Breakfast at 7:00 AM. Depart Simba Camp and begin the ascent through the heath zone. The vegetation changes from dense forest to giant heather, proteas, and lobelias. The gradient is gentle and the trail well-maintained. Look back for increasingly spectacular views of the Kenyan plains stretching to the horizon.
Afternoon: Continue the ascent into the moorland zone. The landscape becomes more open and rocky with scattered tussock grass and alpine flowers. Arrive at Second Cave Camp in the early afternoon. Spend the afternoon resting and acclimatising. Hydration is particularly important at this elevation.
Evening: Dinner at the camp as the sun sets over the African plains. The air is noticeably cooler here. Your guide will check each climber condition and discuss the next day trek. Stargazing after dark is spectacular at this elevation.

Day 3

Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp

Full Day Trek: 4-5 hrs Elevation: 3,450m to 3,600m Accommodation: Kikelewa Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Leave Second Cave Camp and trek across the moorland plateau towards the eastern slopes of Kilimanjaro. The terrain becomes more rugged as you traverse the saddle between the main summit and Mawenzi Peak. Kikelewa Camp is located in a sheltered valley at 3,600 metres (11,811 feet) with stunning views of the surrounding peaks. This relatively short day allows for continued acclimatisation with a modest elevation gain.

Morning: Breakfast at 7:00 AM. Depart Second Cave Camp and traverse across a wide moorland valley. The trail offers outstanding views of Mawenzi Peak ahead and the plains of Kenya to the north. The terrain is rocky underfoot with alpine vegetation.
Afternoon: The trail descends slightly into a sheltered valley where Kikelewa Camp is situated. Despite being at a similar elevation to Second Cave, the camp location offers protection from the wind. Arrive in the early afternoon, giving you plenty of time to rest and hydrate.
Evening: Hot dinner served in the dining tent. The guides will brief you on the increasingly challenging terrain ahead. Ensure your trekking gear is properly organised for the next day higher altitude push.

Day 4

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Full Day Trek: 4-5 hrs Elevation: 3,600m to 4,330m Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This day involves a significant ascent into the alpine desert zone. The landscape becomes stark and dramatic, dominated by volcanic rock and the imposing bulwark of Mawenzi Peak. The trail climbs steadily to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, situated at 4,330 metres (14,200 feet) in a high-altitude valley beneath the sheer cliffs of Mawenzi. The camp is named after the small glacial tarn (lake) nearby. This is the highest camp on the Rongai Route and preparation point for the summit push.

Morning: Early breakfast. Depart Kikelewa Camp and begin the ascent into the alpine desert. The vegetation thins dramatically as you climb higher. The path becomes rockier and the air noticeably thinner. Take frequent rest breaks and maintain a slow, steady pace.
Afternoon: Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp in a dramatic high-altitude amphitheatre beneath Mawenzi Peak. The camp features a beautiful alpine tarn fed by glacial meltwater. The views of Mawenzi jagged spires are among the most spectacular on the entire mountain. Rest is essential here as you are now above 4,300 metres.
Evening: Early dinner and early bedtime. Your guide will explain the acclimatisation hike planned for tomorrow and the summit strategy. Ensure your summit-day clothing and equipment are organised. Sleep at this altitude can be challenging.

Day 5

Mawenzi Tarn Camp - Acclimatisation Day

Full Day Short Hike: 2-3 hrs Elevation: 4,330m Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This dedicated acclimatisation day is critical for summit success. Spending a full day at this altitude allows your body to produce more red blood cells and adapt to the reduced oxygen. A short acclimatisation hike to a higher elevation following the climb high, sleep low principle helps prepare your body for the summit push. The day also offers incredible photographic opportunities of Mawenzi Peak and the surrounding landscape.

Morning: Sleep in and enjoy a relaxed breakfast at camp. The extra rest at this altitude is valuable. Your guide will lead a short acclimatisation hike in the late morning, gaining approximately 100-200 metres in elevation before returning to camp.
Afternoon: Rest at camp and hydrate. Spend time photographing the incredible scenery. Your guide will provide a detailed briefing on summit night, explaining the route, timing, what to wear, and what to expect.
Evening: Early dinner followed by final equipment check. Lay out all summit clothing. Go to bed early as you will be woken around midnight for the summit attempt.

Summit day - the moment you have been training for! You will be woken around midnight for a light snack and hot drink before beginning the ascent. The climb to the crater rim at Gilman Point (5,681 metres) takes approximately 6-7 hours through the dark. From Gilman Point, it is another 1-2 hours along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres (19,341 feet). After celebrating at the summit, descend to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest.

Morning: Wake at midnight for tea and biscuits. Depart Mawenzi Tarn Camp under a canopy of stars. The ascent follows a rocky trail up the eastern flank towards the crater rim. The gradient is relentless but not technically difficult. Your guide sets a slow, steady pace - one step at a time.
Afternoon: Reach Gilman Point on the crater rim just as dawn breaks. From here, follow the crater rim trail to Uhuru Peak, passing spectacular glaciers and the iconic summit signpost. After photos and celebration, begin the descent back to the crater rim and down to Horombo Hut.
Evening: Arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720 metres) in the late afternoon. A hot meal and a warm sleeping bag await. The sense of achievement is overwhelming. Your guide will present your summit certificate.
